This year marks a memorable moment and an important milestone for everyone at Superior A.R.T. This year is a big anniversary – not 1, 5, or even 10 years, but 15 years since Superior A.R.T. opened its doors to our esteemed patients. We can’t even begin to describe how proud we are of all ours doctors and staff over that time, of how far we have come in our mission to assist, across the globe, patients with fertility and genetic concerns and issues.

Despite our many achievements to date, we are looking forward to even greater achievements. But it is still important and worthwhile to take some time to review and share some of our most notable and proudest accomplishments.

1. More Than 10,000 Successful Cases

Over the past 15 years, Superior A.R.T., has managed to deliver more than 10,000 successful treatment cases. Whether it be via IVF, ICSI, or IUI, whether it be genetic or non-genetic, whether it be with few or with many infertility issues, we have been committed to helping our patients overcome their issues and finally have a healthy baby of their own.

• Experienced in PGT for Genetic Diseases and Disorders: More Than 200+ Genetic Diseases Screened Successfully

For patients who are carriers of genetic diseases and disorders, some of which when inherited by their children are severe and incurable, having a baby using IVF/ICSI in combination with PGT (genetic testing of the early embryo), allows the inheritance of these genetic diseases to be preventable. This is achieved by the use of a “preimplantation genetic testing” (PGT) during an IVF/ICSI cycle. PGT has several types, PGT-A, PGT-M, PGT-M/A, or PGT-SR, with “A” standing for Aneuploidy (correct number of chromosomes), “M” for molecular or monogenic (specific gene disorders), and “SR” for Structural Rearrangements (such as chromosome translocations)

Over the past 15 years, PGT has allowed our scientists to screen and detect more than 200 genetic diseases in the early embryo and select only the healthy embryos for transfer. This simultaneously helped patients have a baby free from any genetic disorder as well as increasing the patient’s rate of healthy pregnancy.

• Pregnancy Rate: Up to 72% with ICSI and PGT Combined

Amongst the many combined fertility treatments possible, one of the most successful is the combination of ICSI and PGT.

ICSI, or Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection, is a variation in the fertilization method used during IVF, where instead of letting a number of sperm combine with an egg in a laboratory dish on their own, in ICSI a single washed and selected sperm is injected directly into a mature egg. It is used where the male has low numbers of normal motile sperm, or where patient is using PGT to reduce the risk of DNA contamination from sperm heads and cumulus cells.

PGT (using NGS or Next Generation Sequencing), is a technology that screens the sequence of a patient’s DNA to detect genetic variations associated with genetic or chromosomal diseases or disorders. Used in combination with ICSI , we have achieved an average pregnancy rate of up to 72% over the past 15 years.

• The Use of the Geri^® Time-Lapse Incubator

The goal of IVF is to help patients achieve a pregnancy. To get there, one of the most crucial steps is how well our embryologists can culture an embryo. The combination of expert embryologists, the latest culture medias, and the most up-to-date equipment, is necessary in any fertility centre is to assist the doctor getting our patients pregnant.

At Superior A.R.T., we use the Geri^® Time-Lapse Incubator, the newest generation of Time-Lapse Incubator Technology available, assisting our embryologists to culture as many embryos as possible to reach the perfect blastocyst stage. With the Geri^® Time-Lapse Incubator, there is a single high-quality microscope camera system installed and dedicated to each culture chamber, allowing detailed tracking of embryo development without the plate or the embryos having to move, thereby reducing the risk of danger or damage to any embryo. Each chamber is independently controlled and monitored, providing individualized, optimal culture conditions, allowing them to grow to the blastocyst stage and ready for PGT and transfer.

• The Use of Gidget^®, an Electronic Witnessing solution

As well as the Geri^® Time-Lapse Incubator, one of the latest technological advancements we use is the Gidget^® electronic witnessing system, specifically designed to prevent mismatches from occurring in the laboratory, and supporting for traceability and audit reporting.

With this electronic witnessing system, we can ensure that embryos and patient samples are handled, moved, and identified correctly, reducing the risk of error and easing patient concerns. In addition, Electronic Witnessing Systems enable the electronic traceability of the staff members performing each procedure, the time it was performed, etc., and increase the efficiency of the whole process.

• The Use of Karyomappping in PGT-M Test

Karyomapping is a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) test that uses a DNA finger-printing technique to identify which embryos have inherited an altered gene where patients are carriers of a specific genetic disorder. Unlike other PGT-M tests used in some clinics, which can take months to complete the test workup, karyomapping at Superior A.R.T. usually allows completion of the test workup in a few days, and never more than 1-3 weeks, is proven to be highly accurate, demonstrates great reliability, and allows for PGT-A for chromosomal aneuploidy at the same time on the one biopsy sample.

Karyomapping provides information across the entire genome, meaning we can also identify many of the chromosomal errors that cause implantation failure and miscarriage. Karyomapping therefore has the potential to help us identify the embryos that have the best chance of pregnancy success, improving live birth rates for couples.

Amongst our PGT-M achievements, we had the first successful application in South East Asia of Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) for Spinal Muscular Atrophy type 1 (SMA1), a quite common and debilitating genetic disorder.

• A Major Provider of Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) for Several Hospitals and Clinics across Thailand

• Prevention and Curing Thalassemia: More than 15 Successful Cases of Siblings Affected by Thalassemia being cured

One of our proudest achievements and greatest successes is in being the first fertility clinic in Asia to both successfully deliver babies free from Thalassemia and, using HLA matching to an existing affected sibling, allow the subsequent cord blood stem cell collection and curative bone marrow transplantation of the thalassemia diseased sibling.

This combination of PGT-M to select healthy, thalassemia free embryos, along with PGT-M for HLA-matching to match the HLA tissue compatibility region of the embryo to an existing sibling affected by thalassemia, has allowed the collection of cord blood stem cells at birth and the successful curative bone marrow transplantation in more than 15 thalassemia diseased siblings. Prevention and cure, liberating the families form the torment of this disease.
